Composer in Residence 2016: Mauricio Pauly

Starting this year, music@villaromana will host a composer-in-residence in the premises of Villa Romana. He will live and work in the Villa from August 10 until September 7. Mauricio Pauly was selected on the basis of his talent for innovation and his ability to create works that surpass the limits of classical music. His creations open up to the performatory gesture, interaction with new technologies and the experimentation of a new process of composition.

Mauricio Pauly (born in Costa Rica in 1976, lives and works in Manchester) writes music for mixed chamber ensembles, often incorporating performatory electronics and amplification and prefabricated sounds. He is co-artistic director of the ensemble Distractfold and part of the improvisation duo Inner Helmet. In 2014-15 he carried out research at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Among other things Pauly is a teacher at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, United Kingdom, where he is Associate Professor and coordinator of the MMus PoP Music. He is also a studio tutor at the Architectural Association Interprofessional Studio in London.

The residence offers the composer a one-month sojourn in Florence enabling him to become familiar with the Florentine music scene and with the public. During this time he will work on the composition of a new musical production, a site-specific work which will be the result of his research in the city of Florence. The commissioned work, a Pocket Opera, will be presented during the autumn edition of the music@villaromana festival, to be held on 30 September and 1 October 2016. Pocket Opera is a form of musical theatre that encapsulates the broader functions of traditional opera in a concise format. Although no less rich and imaginative, it is a compact genre and for this very reason can be easily adapted to more varied and less institutional contexts.

There will be a new composer-in-residence every year, and candidates will be selected by the two artistic directors of the music@villaromana festival Francesco Dillon and Emanuele Torquati.
