The sixth season of music@villaromana will come alive on 13 and 14 June, taking its theme from FOUR WALLS, the famous work by John Cage. But John Cage is not the object/subject of the musical and visual exploration taking place during this new musical weekend conceived by Francesco Dillon and Emanuele Torquati. Rather, the curators have chosen a focus that seeks to evoke the multiplicity and variety of the four events offered to the public: four sides of an ideal musical cube ranging from concert performance (Slowind and Lukoszevieze) to installation and electronic performance (Perini and Orsi).

Saturday 13 June will open with the virtuosos of the Slowind woodwind quartet, who hail from Lubiana and were once part of the prestigious Slovenian Philarmonic; the quartet will also inaugurate the upcoming Biennale Musica in Venice. Their programme,Eastern Wind, includes some of the most gifted composers on the contemporary scene, such as Salvatore Sciarrino and Toshio Hosokawa, with a piece that the Japanese composer dedicated specifically to the quartet. In addition to music by the great classical composer Gyorgy Ligeti, Slowind will propose the Italian debut of a very recent work by Vito Zuraj, a rising star in composition and resident at Villa Massimo last year, as well as the explorations in improvisation by the dramatic Vinko Globokar.
The evening will continue with the Night Concert, in which the composer and performer Alessandro Perini, an Italian based in Sweden, will lead the audience into his Flying Circus along an itinerary through the villa’s spaces, enlivened by his original, interactive installations.
On Sunday 14 June The Cello in my Life will go on stage: this solo concert spotlights cellist Anton Lukoszevieze, an eclectic London-based musician and composer originally from Lithuania and founder of the historic group Apartment House. The varied and diverse programme includes the Italian debut of works by two composers, Argentina’s Maria Cecilia Villanueva and Egidjia Medeksaite from Lithuania, as well as the great Morton Feldman, alongside pieces by English composer James Clarke and german’s Klaus Hüber. The second half of the evening, In the Dark, will be brought to life by the Berlin-based electronic musician Fabio Orsi. The performance will take place entirely in the dark, for an emotionally captivating effect. Orsi recently recorded this project in a highly acclaimed discographic production presented for the first time ever in Italy for music@villaromana.
